An Old Barn: Part 2 – Conversion

Following on from our initial investigation into the barn at the listed public house:

In order to preserve the historical integrity of the wider site and maintain the original aesthetic of the barn, while at the same time beginning the process of converting it into a multi-function facility, we have been collaborating with material specialists and national conservation agencies. Our challenge is to sound up the structure, provide insulation to the walls, roof and floor and present clean and tidy finishes while maintaining and celebrating the aesthetic elements and historic value.

We have created a warm roof by adding insulation to the external face of the timbers, which have been restored, cleaned and protected. Three timbers in the central part of the roof that were softwood, placed during previous works, have been replaced for air-dried oak. The original timbers were likely lost due to rot, caused by failure in the roof covering. Visible blacksmith strapping matching the existing style has been fixed to the timbers at wall level. All of it can be appreciated from the inside, as everything has been kept on show.
